sitemap.xml refers to sitemap1.xml

OR 3.2.5.

Just wondering if this is correct behaviour and search engines will handle it as some SEO checking websites can't find the sitemap.

I have submitted both to Google Webmaster Tools today. sitemap1.xml contains full sitemap as expected.

  1. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
  2. -<sitemapindex xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9">; -<sitemap> <loc>http://www.mysite.com/sitemap1.xml</loc>; <lastmod>2013-04-10T15:28:27+12:00</lastmod> </sitemap> </sitemapindex>

That's exactly how it's supposed to work per the sitemaps.org sitemap specification. 'sitemap.xml' is the "root" of your sitemap and is what what google et. al. uses as it contains links to the other sitemap files.
